Footballers top league for motoring convictions

Professional footballers are the drivers most likely to have points on their driving license for committing offences such as speeding, running red lights and using a phone whilst driving, according to new research by car insurance specialist, elephant.co.uk.

elephant.co.uk looked at data from over 3 million motorists to see which occupations are the worst offenders for motoring offences. Professional footballers top the list, but politicians and surgeons were also found to have below average driving records.

Almost a third of footballers have points on their license meaning they are nearly two and half times more likely than the average motorist to be caught breaking the rules of the road.

And the news isn't much better for the UK's beleaguered politicians who come in at number seven in the list of the ten worst occupations. More than a fifth of politicians have motoring convictions, making them almost twice as likely as the average driver to have points.

The ten occupations with the most driving convictions are:

elephant.co.uk managing director, Brian Martin, commented, 'Powerful cars are closely associated with the footballers' lifestyle so perhaps for some of them the temptation to speed is simply too much.

'As for politicians, our research shows they are not above the law. Why so many have motoring convictions isn't clear but many spend quite a lot of time on the road commuting from constituencies a long way from the seat of government .

'I think we can safely say driving isn't an area where we should be looking to them for guidance.'

The drivers found to have the least motoring convictions are Au Pairs. With only 1.9% of them having points on their licence, they are much less likely than the average driver to have committed a motoring offence.

And it seems driving examiners and instructors really do practice what they preach as they both feature in the list of ten occupations with the least motoring convictions.

Brian Martin continued, 'Considering they are the ones who make sure new motorists meet the standards required, I was relieved to see driving examiners and instructors having a better than average record for committing driving offences.'
