The study of more than 45,000 theft claims showed that Italian cars, such as Alfa Romeos and Fiats top the list of nationality of cars most likely to be stolen.
Closely following Italian vehicles are German cars which include Audis, BMWs and Volkswagen, with British cars like Fords, Minis and Vauxhalls in third place.
Brian Martin, managing director of elephant.co.uk, said, "We usually associate cars from different countries with different qualities - for example that German cars tend to be well engineered, Italian cars are stylish and British cars classic. We wanted to see if there were any trends when it came down to the nationality of cars being stolen."
The research also revealed that it's the owners of Spanish Seats that are the least likely to suffer the heartbreak of their car being stolen, along with those who drive Czech Skodas and Swedish Saabs and Volvos.
Brian Martin said, "There are many reasons why some cars are more popular with car thieves than others. It could be they are more desirable for professional thieves, or maybe their security systems aren't so good and of course, in many cases it's just that they are in the wrong place at the wrong time."
