Favourite Famous Cars

It seems that British motorists look back at their childhood with rose-tinted spectacles, as motorists from each age group voted for cars in television series popular when they were growing up.

Motorists in their 20s voted for ‘80s classic KITT, the talking car from Knight Rider, as their favourite fictional car. Drivers in their 30s voted for the Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee. Motorists in their late teens voted for the retro ‘coolness' of The Italian Job Minis, no doubt helped in their popularity by the recent remake of the classic film.

Motorists aged over 41 bucked the trend for nostalgic favourite fictional cars, and voted for a British classic and the more sedate pace of Inspector Morse's Jaguar.

Ceri Assiratti, Managing Director of elephant.co.uk, said: “I think this survey shows that nostalgia is more important than performance when people are asked to pick their favourite fictional cars. Personally, my favourites are the Minis in The Italian Job. I haven't seen the remake, but the original is a classic. I think it's unusual for the cars featured in a film to be as famous as the actors!”

Men and women also had different favourite fictional cars when they were asked by elephant.co.uk. The favourite fictional car for women motorists is Herbie, the fun loving VW Beatle who has appeared in films from the ‘60s to his most recent incarnation with Lindsey Lohan. The most popular cars for men are the Italian Job Minis, although these are closely followed by the time travelling DeLorean in Back To The Future.
