A new government road safety campaign has revealed drivers caught drink driving for the first time could lose as much as £50,000.
The estimate, which was made as part of the £1.68 million THINK! Spring campaign, also highlighted offender are likely to face a minimum loss of £20,000 in personal finance.
The government will be promoting these facts with TV and radio adverts in an effort to deter motorists and car insurance policy holdersfrom drink driving and build on their successful winter results.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond told the Press Association about the continued problem of drink driving, saying, "It might only look like a humble pint of beer, but it could end up costing much more than a few quid. In fact, it comes with an eye-watering hidden cost if it pushes you over the limit.
"Most people know not to drink and drive but a small number still do, which is why we are highlighting the consequences of a drink-drive conviction through our THINK! campaign. Anyone thinking of drinking and driving should be without any doubt. If you are caught driving over the limit, you will face a heavy court fine and lose your licence. You could even go to prison."
Motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol face a maximum £5,000 fine, £4,800 in legal costs if they plead not guilty and around £8,000 of other additional costs for the 11 years their conviction remains on their license. Drivers earning the national average wage could also lose £35,000 in earnings during their 15 month motoring ban. |
