TV Policeman writes off £40,000 'supercar'

( 27/01/2012 )

A policeman who had a major role in a police documentary show has wrecked a £40,000 supercar on a test drive. PC Paul Fletcher of the Greater Manchester Police was driving a 155mph Volkswagen Golf R when he crashed the vehicle at 2am in the morning. The car was completely written off - something that should remind drivers of the importance of taking out comprehensive car insurance.

The vehicle was being trialled by the GMP in order to assess whether it was worth purchasing the Volkswagens for use in high-speed pursuits. The crash was filmed by an officer who was driving another high performance car as part of the trial.

PC Fletcher had previously appeared in the BBC show 'Car Wars', in which cameras filmed the GMP during high-speed car chases. The officer proved so popular with the viewing public that fans put together a Facebook page called the 'Paul Fletcher Appreciation Society' in his honour.

PC Fletcher lost control of the Volkswagen after skidding at a roundabout on Wharfside Way, in the Trafford Park area of Greater Manchester. The crash was so serious that he suffered spinal injuries and had to be removed from the vehicle by fire-fighters.

The police officer has now been released from hospital but may face criminal charges from the Crown Prosecution Service.

A spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Police issued a statement to the press confirming that the force would now be reassessing its procedures for assessing high speed police vehicles: "As a result of this incident, GMP is currently reviewing its policy on officer's test driving demonstration cars on public roads."

He went on to say that the "review is ongoing and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment."
