Wrong-turn drink-driver arrives at police HQ

( 03/09/2010 )

Getting behind the wheel while drunk is hardly evidence of clear thinking, but one driver compounded his foolishness by taking a wrong turn and ending up at a police HQ.

Unemployed builder Edward Gallagher got himself lost on the way home from a boozy evening out with friends, taking a wrong turn and ending up in the car park of Central Scotland Police in Stirling.

Surprised by the visit of the 52-year-old, officers approached his Vauxhall Corsa, which had come to rest on a private access road to the parking lot, STV reports.

Getting wind of the strong possibility that Gallagher - who apparently "reeked" of booze - might be drunk, officers administered a breath test, which in turn revealed that he was more than twice the legal limit.

Depute fiscal Sue Ruta told Stirling Sheriff Court that the Denny man - who admitted drink-driving - was also slurring his words when spoken to by officers, though apparently made no reply when he was cautioned and charged.

Ken Dalling, defending, said that despite driving in to socialise with mates, Gallagher had originally intended to get the bus home. He drily noted that his client's change in thinking - and the ensuing escapade - "clearly shows the problems of drinking and driving".

Sheriff Peter Paterson disqualified Gallagher from driving for 18 months, and slapped him with a £150 fine.

The foolhardy events call to mind a brace of unfortunate episodes involving drink-drivers and police.

In February, a drink-driver inadvertently gave the Agincourt salute to the chief constable of Durham Police, misguidedly believing he was flicking a 'V' sign at a regular member of the public while manoeuvring on the A1.

Meanwhile, in a slightly more controlled interaction with officers, a Wisconsin woman shopped herself while boozed-up at the wheel. The 49-year-old phoned a police dispatcher to opaquely confess that "somebody's really drink-driving", before enquiring: "how many people do you get that call in on themself?"
