Jenson Button is UK's 'most-polluting' motorist

( 17/02/2010 )

Jenson Button may be best known as the world's swiftest driver, but he has also been revealed as the UK's most polluting celebrity motorist.

By the reckoning of the City Car Group, the Formula 1 world champion has a fleet of motors with average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 383.1g/km - getting on for three times the typical figure for a small hatchback.

And the figures take no account of the monumental levels of fuel burned in his professional life, says the car hire group, which advocates its pay-as-you-go alternative to car ownership.

Although Jenson does own an economical Smart, the jewel in the crown of his 12-vehicle collection - the fabled Bugatti Veyron - does push up his average somewhat. The hypercar puts out a whopping 574g CO2/km, according to the group - a figure which carries it off the scale for the UK's 'worst offenders'.

And the list of top celebrity polluters includes many other household names.

Second place goes to renowned speed-freak and Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay, while Simon Cowell - another Veyron owner - powers into third.

Two of the Top Gear boys make the cut, with Richard Hammond in eighth place, and Jeremy Clarkson edging into tenth.

But while it's no surprise to see everybody's favourite motor-mouth on the list, it's perhaps more of one to discover that his garage apparently sees a Lamborghini and Aston Martin rubbing shoulders with a mere Ford Focus.

Suggesting that celebrities ought to set a good example by cutting back on carbon emissions, City Car Club CEO James Finlayson offered a cheeky olive branch.

"We would be happy to sort out Jenson Button and any of the other celebrities on our list with a membership to City Car Club so that they can reduce their carbon emissions in 2010".
