Mondeo noses into living room in 'scene from film'

( 09/02/2010 )

The domestic peace of a sleeping family was shattered by a suspected drunk-driver, who had smashed headlong into their living room after ploughing across a neighbouring garden.

Strewing masonry across the carpet from the force of the impact, the Ford Mondeo made its rude entrance to the Singh family home in Erdington at around two o'clock on Monday morning.

Steve Singh told the Birmingham Mail he and his family initially thought there had been an accident on the road outside their house.

However, when they realised they could see no wreckage out on the street - but could hear the ominous sound of water escaping from a busted radiator - it dawned on the Singhs that the accident was a little too close to home.

And when one of the sons went downstairs to investigate, he discovered "a scene from a film", with the snout of the car poking straight through into the living room, lights blazing and engine still running.

In fact, only the triumph of strict parenting over an enthusiasm for American sporting extravaganzas averted a greater disaster.

Mr Singh said: "My son wanted to watch the Superbowl and he would have been sitting on the sofa when the car hit, but I told him he should get a proper night's sleep."

The family have been told by experts that they can stay in the house while it is being repaired. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The unexpected visit continues the alarming trend of cars dropping in unannounced on various rooms of the house, including a front bedroom and a kitchen, and even - in a topsy-turvy incident Down Under - landing on a roof.
