'Whole road' in DVLA tyre slash attack

(08/02/2010)

Collecting tax from the nation's drivers may not be the most popular of careers, but it appears that it may have inspired a backlash - in which dozens of cars had their tyres slashed outside a DVLA office.

According to eyewitnesses, up to 40 cars were struck at a site in Morriston, Swansea, leaving employees of the Government's vehicle licensing and road tax department unable to get home.

But while an individual with road tax grudges is one theory behind the vandalism, the South Wales Evening Post has suggested that it may be the extreme outcome of a turf tussle over parking space.

Apparently DVLA workers leaving their cars in residential streets - allegedly making access difficult and parking over driveways - has become something of an issue, with local meetings having focused on the perceived problem.

According to an unnamed employee who had been affected by the attacks, two tyres on each of around 40 vehicles had been slashed.

"We came out of work and every car in the road had its tyres slashed - it was unbelievable," he said.

"What kind of scum would do this?"

Pointing out the sheer scale of the attack and the logistics of knifing so many tyres, he added: "You can't slash all these tyres in a couple of seconds - it must have taken someone quite a while to do it, and someone must have seen it happening."

And - despite not making an explicit connection to the DVLA - police are asking the same questions, appealing to anyone with information to come forward, particularly about a black Ford seen in the vicinity at the time.
