Driver smashes through shop after pump payment anger

(05/02/2010)

A US driver who became enraged over petrol pump protocol drove his truck through the window of the service station, in an alleged attempt to kill a cashier.

Alabama man Roger Mayes, 49, lost his rag over the BP garage's 'pay first' policy, according to the Birmingham News, which meant that the pump would not be turned on until he had produced his means of buying fuel.

Bounding into the shop, Mayes told a member of staff that he was "going to die and go to Hell", according to Randy Christian, Jefferson County Chief Deputy.

He then stormed out to his car and pulled away from the pump, before aiming the vehicle - engine revving - at the garage shop itself. Mayes then accelerated through the plate glass window, smashing through displays at speed and crashing into the cashier's counter.

According to police, the worker - who dived out of the way - would have been hit had he not taken evasive action.

Mayes initially remained in the truck when police arrived, then ran out of the shattered shop, rushing at an officer before he was felled by a stun gun.

He was arrested for attempted murder and for resisting arrest.

"It's a fact that we deal with some bona fide nuts day in and day out," Christian said.

"This incident certainly lends support to that fact."

The moment of madness calls to mind an event last year when a man drove a Rolls Royce into a Tesco store in Andover, Hampshire, after staff refused to sell him alcohol.
