Ladies' bays aim to make parking easier

( 29/12/2009 )

A Chinese supermarket is set to introduce a female-only car park, in a bid to address suggestions that women find parking more difficult than men.

The underground facility, which opens next year at the Wanxiang Tiancheng shopping centre in provincial capital Shijiazhuang city, will aid the fairer sex with car parking spaces that are one metre wider than normal, the Global Times reports.

In addition, the ladies' bays will feature enhanced lighting to aid visibility, and female attendants "specially trained" to direct drivers to their space.

Finishing touches will see the car park decorated with bright colours, "such as pink and light purple", along with "cute cartoon pictures".

The measures have come in response to car insurance statistics, which suggest women cause far more accidents than men in Chinese car parks.

And German research published last week also suggested that women are 'worse' than men at parking. It found that women are less accurate and slower at manoeuvring into spaces, confirming theories about "spatial differences" between the genders.

Supermarket official Wang Zheng tactfully told AFP that the measures were intended to draw out women's "strong sense of colour and different sense of distance," while signs and security equipment were also aimed at answering what women want.

Driving can be a deadly pursuit in China, where police statistics show that more than 200 people die each day.
