13-year-old 'drink-driver' collared in crackdown

( 24/12/2009 )

While Christmas is traditionally associated with snow, Santa, turkey and carols, these days you can add to the list the festive crackdown on drink-drivers.

But this year Welsh police got a seasonal shock when they nabbed the driver of a stolen Vauxhall Corsa which had slammed into a line of parked cars, and discovered a boy barely into his teens at the wheel, the South Wales Echo reported.

And after failing a roadside breath test, the 13-year-old lad was arrested for drink-driving. He is believed to be the youngest person ever arrested for the offence by South Wales Police.

The incident, which took place in the Victoria Park area of Cardiff, allegedly saw the unnamed teenager losing control of the car while driving at speed, before mounting the pavement and ploughing into three parked vehicles and a lamppost.

An eyewitness told the paper he saw the Corsa come "flying" past seconds before the crash.

"I went running up and expected them to be dead," he said.

Officers had volunteered to pass up a day off in order to enforce the Christmas drink-driving crackdown - but had expected to be dealing mostly with people who had unwisely got behind the wheel after one too many at a work Christmas bash.

PC Stuart Dix said that the boy was the youngest suspected drink-driver he had encountered in 12 years policing the roads.

In addition to the 13-year-old, a 19-year-old man was in the Corsa. They have both been charged with aggravated vehicle taking, according to South Wales Police.
