Drink-driver shops herself to police

( 02/11/2009 )

There's no excuse for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, but drink-drivers are rarely as composed and honest as one Wisconsin woman who shopped herself to police.

Mary Strey, 49, made the late night call from her car after realising she was in no state to be out on the roads in Clark County, candidly telling police "somebody's really drunk-driving".

In the surreal conversation that followed, a dispatcher at the Clark County Sherriff's Department, asked Strey if she was following the driver she suspected of being intoxicated.

"No, I am them," she replied.

"OK, so you're calling to report you're driving drunk?" asked the bemused operator.

Strey was described by the Wausau Daily Herald as having sounded "somewhat surprised with herself" throughout the call, and even asked the dispatcher "how many people you get that call in on themself?"

She was told to pull over. After waiting for officers she failed a sobriety test and was arrested for being more than twice the legal alcohol limit.

Strey is due to appear in court in December on a drink-driving charge.

Chief deputy Jim Backus admitted that it's rare for people to report themselves to the police, and said he couldn't remember a similar incident involving a drink-driver.

"The good thing is no-one was hurt," he added.
