Few Top Gear viewers could forget the Stig's stunning lap in Ferrari's £1 million FXX supercar.
And when the programme's enigmatic test driver was 'unveiled' as none other than seven times Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, it seemed unlikely that the car's lap record would ever be beaten.
Now a British company - which bills itself as "officially the quickest supercar producer in the world" - has done just that, using its own lightweight V8 rocket that can be bought for as little as £30,000.
The Ultima GTR 720 had already set a time of 1m 12.8s around the track in 2007, smashing the then-record of 1m 17.6s held by speedy Swede, the Koenigsegg CCX.
But after tweaks to the GTR's setup it has posted a time of 1m 9.9s - edging ahead of even Schuey's scorching 1m 10.7s record.
But the twist in the tail of this particular giant-slaying is that the Stig was nowhere to be found - the GTR is yet to feature on the famous motoring programme despite, according to Ultima, "repeated requests".
Ultima's director Richard Marlow explained that the record was set by the company after its car was given a more track-biased setup, to better match the non-road-legal FXX.
"Of course, unlike the Ferrari... we were able to drive our road car back home afterwards," he added.
