While human commentators debate what will power cars into the future, a bizarre Danish accident suggests the vehicles might be prepared to settle it among themselves.
The three-car pileup, which took place earlier in the month, involved three of the most opinion-dividing car types around: a 'gas-guzzling' 4x4, a petrol-electric hybrid, and a fully-electric car.
But the electric car in question was no city runabout, it was one of just a handful of customer-ready Tesla Roadsters - a Lotus Elise-based supercar that can whizz to 60mph in just 3.9 seconds.
The exact cause of the smash remains unclear, but it seems that the driver of a Toyota Prius failed to slow down for some traffic lights that were protecting roadworks.
And the hybrid - once the unrivalled poster boy of green motoring - charged into the back of the £94,000 Tesla with enough force to knock it almost fully under the VW Touareg stopped in front.
Pictures from the scene of the crash reveal a destroyed Tesla - though amazingly, the driver is said to have emerged from the sports car with only minor bruising.
And while the Prius received only moderate damage, the luxury German 4x4 looked to have won this particular battle.
Perched atop the ruined roadster, the Touareg's only visible injuries were scrapes to the exhaust silencer and bumper, while a red morsel poking from its rear suggests it even took its own nibble of tasty Tesla into the bargain.
