Judge in second 'drink-driving' arrest

( 21/09/2009 )

A Crown Court judge on bail for drink-driving has been arrested after being caught drunk in a car for the second time in three weeks.

His Honour Bruce Macmillan, 63, was taken into custody and charged with being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle - meaning he was over the legal alcohol limit, though the vehicle was stationary at the time.

The incident, which took place in Toxteth, Liverpool, follows Judge Macmillan being arrested for drink-driving at the end of August after he was seen driving erratically on the M6 motorway - a charge he is due to answer to in front of Chorley magistrates on September 30.

He was pulled over by officers near the Charnock Richard services after heading out of Liverpool towards Lancashire in his Vauxhall Signum.

And Judge Macmillan, who sits at Liverpool Crown Court, stands to lose his £128,000-a-year job if convicted of the offence.

According to the Liverpool Echo, he was ordered not to hear any cases following the first offence, and if convicted would likely be disrobed by the Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor.

Judge Macmillan has been released on conditional bail.
