Knight Rider's ride is 'most loved' famous motor

( 07/09/2009 )

Many of us have spoken to our cars at one point or another, but it seems the best-loved motor is one that talks back.

KITT, Michael Knight's trusty transport in the Knight Rider TV series, has topped a poll of iconic motors conducted by MSN Cars, receiving 24% of the 7,000 votes cast.

The Knight Industries Two Thousand, which could pull off tricks such as driving itself and shrugging off explosions, is perhaps most recognisable by the pulsing red 'anamorphic equalizer' at its front - and by the way it both advised and chided David Hasselhoff's character as they battled baddies.

It's perhaps no surprise to find Del Boy's yellow Reliant Robin (16% of the votes) unable to keep up with Knight's 200+mph Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, but even Doc Brown's time-travelling DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future was left trailing, with 12% of the votes.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Herbie, the Batmobile and TV cop Starsky's red and white Ford Gran Torino were among the other cars left in the dust.

Considering KITT's victory, MSN Cars' Tom Evans said that the black car "enables you to play the hero".

"With his loyal personality and often sensible advice, he's above and beyond just a cool car, he's modern man's best friend."
