Truck driver saves runaway car

( 21/08/2009 )

A delivery driver put his lorry on the line to stop a runaway car that was rolling towards a 1000ft hillside in the Welsh valleys.

Travis Perkins worker Dyfrig Willis was driving up the steep incline in Evanstown, Mid Glamorgan, when he noticed the car sliding away with its precious cargo - four-year-old Mcauly Jones.

The 28-year-old truck driver positioned his vehicle in the path of the car as a road block.

He then joined the little boy's mum, council worker Amy Morgan, to try and reach the runaway car - slowing it before the vehicle smashed into the makeshift buffer.

And although the car was left with an array of battle scars - including a smashed windscreen and bonnet - Mcauly emerged unharmed.

It's thought that the car's handbrake had failed.

Bashful hero Dyfrig said he didn't want to think about the consequences of what could have happened, but insisted it was just all in a day's work.

"As I work for a builders' merchant, every time I turn up to a site, they are all on about it," he told the BBC.

"I'm getting a bit of a ribbing."
