Girl leaps from car in cliff plunge

( 17/08/2009 )

An 11-year-old who was turning on and tuning in to her favourite music nearly dropped out - while parked on a cliff-top in her grandparents' car.

Paige Dean accidentally sent the Citroen C4 rolling down a 250ft hill towards a terrifying drop at Benllech in Anglesey, when she reached for her mobile phone and knocked the handbrake.

The JLS-loving schoolgirl, who was on holiday with her grandparents at the Golden Sunset caravan park, tried to lift the handbrake again as the vehicle rolled across a field, demolishing tents.

Eventually - just two seconds before plunging into the Irish Sea - Paige managed to yank the door handle and jump out of the car, which narrowly avoided two fishermen on the beach below.

It smashed down onto rocks before being submerged by the sea.

Paige was taken to hospital in Bangor and treated for shock, though she emerged from her ordeal with just a couple of minor scrapes.

Grandmother Marie Dean, who said she was now looking for a new car, praised the little girl's death-defying escape as a "miracle".

"How she got the presence of mind to jump, I don't know - an adult would've found it difficult to cope," she told the BBC.

"But she did it."
