Star England footballer Jermain Defoe is suing the police following his arrest last month for driving offences, his lawyer has said.
The Spurs striker was pulled over by Essex Police on 27 July and held on suspicion of driving while disqualified - for more than five hours, according to his lawyer.
But Defoe's six-month ban, handed out after he was found guilty of two speeding offences, had been suspended pending an appeal.
The BBC says it has seen a letter of apology addressed to Defoe from Essex Police, apologising for the arrest.
In a statement give to Admiral News, Essex police said: "We're conducting an internal investigation and liaising with Mr Defoe's legal team to ascertain the details of his complaint ? therefore we cannot make any further comment at this time."
Defoe's lawyer Nick Freeman - 'Mr Loophole' - said that the legal action was a matter of principle, and that any compensation would be given to charity, the BBC reports.
Defoe hit the headlines earlier this week after saving England from a defeat at the hands of the Dutch in Wednesday's friendly, scoring twice to turn around a 2-0 deficit and earn a draw.
