'Smart tossing' craze gives cars a Dutch dunking

( 28/07/2009 )

After an unlucky motorist lost his Smart car to the sea off the Dorset coast back in April, the famously diminutive car brand is once again making waves.

Dutch police are issuing warnings to Smart car owners in Amsterdam, in response to an apparent craze for flinging the tiny cars into the city's canals.

Described by dutchamsterdam.nl as an "urban version of cow tipping", the incidents - attributed to groups of youths - are mostly occurring over weekend evenings.

The Smart cars' small size allows for them to be parked sideways-on in parking spaces that run length-ways along the canals. This, teamed with the vehicles' light weight - as little as 730kg - means that they can easily be pushed into the canals.

In some cases where guard-rails block access to the canal, groups of vandals are said to have lifted vehicles and cast them into the water, earning the craze the label 'Smart tossing'.

Smart car owner Casper de Jong was woken by police after his vehicle had been discovered in a canal.

"Several weeks ago the same thing happened to my companion's Smart," he said.

"Both cars were a complete write-off."
