Prancing panini - the 'Ferrari' bread van

( 23/07/2009 )

Hot on the heals of this week's marine Maserati, the latest bizarre car from Italy is a Citroen 2CV bread van that - thanks to its Ferrari 355 origins - hits 60mph in less than five seconds.

The car's story began when Nicolo Lamberti and Milko Dalla Costa, who run the Italian Nimik rally team, procured a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta that had been abandoned in a garage, and decided to combine it with the shell of the Citroen 2CV bread-van.

£150,000 and five years' work later, the bizarre hybrid still contains the Ferrari's 375bhp V8 engine and alloy wheels, as well as its silver gear stick and sporty leather seats.

And while the van proudly wears the 12bhp 2CV's circular headlights and the original van's outline, the size of the body has been increased and giant air intake vents inserted on its sides.

Just in case the hybrid's unusual underpinnings weren't obvious, the creators have placed the famous Ferrari prancing horse above the Citroen double chevron.

Explaining what the two Italians were thinking, Lamberti said that they'd bought the Ferrari without a specific plan. "Because of our crazy minds we were confident that an idea would soon come to us."

Discussing the future for the converted vehicle, he added, "It took us so long to build so at the moment we are just enjoying it and showing it off to people who are passionate about this kind of work.

"But if we meet someone willing to offer us an interesting price then we could sell it."
