A man who was forced to give up driving for years after becoming blind is back behind the wheel after a life-changing operation.
Nigel Cook, from Steeple Ashton in Wiltshire, underwent a procedure that put artificial lenses into his eyes and put him firmly back on the road - after five years of being registered as blind.
He had been suffering from a condition that meant his central vision was clouded over. Starting in his right eye more than ten years ago, over time it spread to his left, forcing him to retire from the police force and relinquish the driver's seat.
But following the breakthrough operation, in which plastic intraocular lenses were inserted into his eyes, he has seen his licence restored and his quality of life transformed.
Cook said that his vision was so bad that he would sometimes struggle to pick out his children at school, but that now just doing the small things - such as ferrying his family around - is a blessing.
"Driving again is the icing on the cake," he said.
