Flags finally fit for patriotic plates

( 28/04/2009 )

Patriotic drivers can now have their flag on a plate, thanks to a change in the law for car registrations.

The new rules, which came into force on Monday, allow drivers to sport the Union Jack, Cross of St George, Red Dragon of Wales or Cross of St Andrew on the left of their number plate - accompanied by the name or abbreviation of their country.

The change marks the end of an eight-year gap between ministers promising legislation to legalise the plates and the Government actually taking action.

Announcing the new rules, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon said: "The display of our national flags is a healthy expression of the pride we have in our country.

"It is right that motorists are now able to celebrate this pride by displaying flags on their number plates and I look forward to seeing our national symbols on cars around the country."

However, Brits venturing onto the Continent will still have to display the traditional oval sign showing which country they have come from - unless they opt for the Euro-friendly number plate option; the blue European circle of stars, containing the letters "GB".
