Don't put the de-icer away just yet - motorists should brace for heavy snow next week, as temperatures look set to plummet again.
Meteorologists have said that this winter is shaping up to be the coldest for at least 13 years, with temperatures in December and January up to 1.5C below average.
Freezing conditions at the beginning of the year made it the busiest time for breakdown organisations for five years.
And while it's been milder over the last fortnight, another sharp cold snap is on its way, prompting the Met Office to issue an advisory of cold weather and possible heavy snow for parts of the UK early next week.
Michael Dukes, of weather forecasters MeteoGroup, said that cold air from western Russia will hit the UK on Sunday night.
"There are growing signs that heavy snow showers will accompany this frigid air during Monday and Tuesday, more especially across southern and eastern parts of England, with the north and west probably staying mainly fine and frosty", he said.
Dukes said that temperatures in the first half of the week will struggle to get above freezing during the day and will drop several degrees below at night.
