An Australian driver who led police on a drunken chase claimed he was too fat too get out of his car when he was finally stopped.
Forty-two-year-old Damian Hannigan was eventually apprehended when he hit a traffic sign, after having led police on a pursuit through south Brisbane in which he drove at more than 60mph into the face of oncoming traffic.
But Brisbane district court heard officers struggled to remove Hannigan, who was swearing and struggling, from the car.
Eventually he was subdued using pepper spray, but was so drunk and obese that three officers were needed to get him into the police van.
However, Hannigan's lawyer said his client was not resisting arrest, but had difficulty getting out of his car due to his weight.
Hannigan, who admitted a slew of offences, including dangerous driving while under the influence, failing to stop, obstructing police and failing to give a breath test, received an 18-month prison sentence and was banned from driving for three years.
Newspaper the Courier Mail reported that despite losing a claimed 30kg since the incident, Hannigan struggled to stand up in court to hear his sentence.
