Stunned Devon clears up after "freak" hailstorm

( 31/10/2008 )

The clear-up has begun in East Devon, after it was hit by one of Britain's weirdest weather events earlier this week.

The area was the scene of what the Met Office has said was "likely to be a once in a lifetime event" on Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning.

Intense rain and hail fell, and a 4ft (1.2m) flood engulfed the town of Ottery St Mary.

Several people had to be airlifted from their homes, and the force of the floodwater is thought to have caused hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of damage.

Cars were pictured the following morning wedged in thick drifts of ice.

It is thought that the flood in Ottery was caused when a culvert quickly became blocked with debris.

One county councillor has called for action to be taken to find out why the area was so badly damaged.

"There has to be a very thorough inquiry with no effort nor expense spared to prevent an occurrence of this terrible situation," said councillor Roger Giles, quoted by BBC News.
