Married or single? You could tell by the colour of the car

Can you tell someone's marital status from the car they drive? elephant.co.uk thinks you can. The online car insurer has looked at the choice of car colour of thousands of British motorists and found the colour they choose may reflect if they are married or single and if the have children or not.

elephant.co.uk studied its database of 700,000 UK motorists and discovered:

  • Single men prefer black cars, while married men choose silver.
  • Single women love red cars, but prefer green when they get married.
  • Motorists also ditch their red or black cars in favour of brown or green ones once they have children.

Head elephant of elephant.co.uk, Nicole Joyce, said, "Our research showed there is definitely a pattern to the colour of car people choose and their marital status. Single men like mysterious and risky black, while single women prefer exciting and sexy red. But once they get married and have the responsibility of being a parent, they tend to ditch these in favour of more muted colours."

elephant.co.uk's research revealed:

  • 29.6% more single men than married men have a black car.
  • 21.9% more married men than single men choose a silver car.
  • 11.5% more single women than married women drive a red car.
  • 23.6% more married women than single women have a green car.
  • People with children are 17.7% more likely to choose green and 46.6% more likely to choose a brown car than motorists without kids.

Nicole Joyce, said, "Although our research is just a bit of fun, it's interesting that single motorists prefer to drive more exciting coloured cars. Maybe they are trying to draw attention to themselves, while married people no longer need to. But quite what our research says about married people who drive red cars, I'm not so sure. Perhaps they are trying to hide something!"
