City centre motorists often have to pay more for car insurance because of the extra risks of car theft.
Research by online car insurance specialist, elephant.co.uk, shows that it is 59% more expensive to insure the same car and driver if they live in the centre of London (SW2) instead of in Chelmsford, Essex (CM1). The driver living in Chelmsford would pay £238.35 to insure their car comprehensively, but insuring the same car in London would cost £380.10, an increase of £141.75.
elephant.co.uk understands the costs of city centre driving, and can offer competitive prices for drivers who are traditionally paying higher premiums.
The difference is still noticeable in Scotland, with a driver living in Glasgow (G69) paying 22% more than the same driver based in Inverness (IV1). The motorist in Inverness would pay £186.90, and the same car in Glasgow would cost £227.81, an increase of £40.91.*
elephant.co.uk has 5 top tips to help prevent theft and keep your insurance premiums down.
- If you have a garage, leave your car in it or on a driveway instead of on the street. This will reduce the likelihood of your car being stolen or broken into.
- If you have to park your car on a street, make sure it is well lit. This will help to deter thieves.
- If you don’t already have one, consider fitting an approved anti-theft system such as an immobiliser and an alarm. Also use a good quality steering lock.
- If you are able to detach your stereo, take it with you when you leave the car. Don’t just leave it for a thief to find in the glove box.
- Never leave any of your belongings on display in the car, as they can attract opportunistic thieves.
