New research of over one million motorists has revealed the people most likely to have personalised number plates. Aberdeen emerged as the UK city with the highest proportion of private plates while surgeons are the occupation most likely to have them on their car.
Elephant.co.uk compiled a list of the top occupations
and towns for personalised plates. It discovered they are
most popular with surgeons; they are more than three times more
likely to have them on their car than average. In second place
were oil rig workers and in third place haulage contractors.
For location of personalised plates, the UK’s oil capital, Aberdeen was head and shoulders ahead of everywhere else. While Scottish towns generally dominate the list. Six of the top ten towns and cities are north of the border including Falkirk and Motherwell in second and third places.
Ceri Assiratti, managing director of elephant.co.uk, said: “Personalised number plates have definitely become more popular since the DVLA made them easier to locate and buy. I think some people like to express their individuality through what they drive and this includes the number plate.
“Our research would suggest that personalised number plates are still most popular with wealthier motorists, for example other occupations in our top twenty include company directors, property developers, and pilots. But there are some surprises in our list, such as textile workers, gas technicians and fishmongers, that would suggest they have become more accessible to everyone.”
According to elephant.co.uk’s research, the overall percentage of people in the UK with a personalised number plate is 2.87%. It has compiled lists of the top ten and bottom towns and cities and top twenty occupations for private plates. These tables are below:
