One of the wettest New Years ever is upon us, and the risk
of flooding in some parts of the UK is extremely high. Now
online car insurance provider, elephant.co.uk is advising motorists to
remain cautious on the roads as more wet weather is predicted
next week. In the last year alone, elephant.co.uk has seen
flood related claims double.
With heavy rain forecast for much of the country this weekend,
elephant.co.uk expects yet more claims to be made as drivers
ignore the danger of deep water on our roads. Tanzie Oliver,
head elephant, said, Although we don't experience extreme
weather conditions in this country, we do get an awful lot
of rain and this poses its own problems. Wet weather can seriously
damage cars, as some of our unfortunate claimants have show:
"One such claim came from a driver who was involved in
a minor accident and had his car moved to a field for 'safety'
by the rescue services, only for the field to become flooded
overnight due to heavy rain. The car then drifted back onto
the road and effectively became a floating bumper car - hit
by several unsuspecting drivers throughout the night!"
elephant.co.uk is also warning drivers that some flood-related
damage might not be covered by their insurance. Customers can
claim for damage caused by bad weather conditions, but this
only applies to parked vehicles. Damage caused by driving through
water and flooding the engine or the interior is not normally
covered.
Tanzie Oliver, goes on to say, "Most insurers will insist
that motorists take reasonable care of their cars. So, if you
are in any doubt about a road being passable, take a different
route. However inconvenient at the time, it will be the best
bet in the long run, and could save you an expensive repair
bill."
